How To Make Your Summer Barbeque Party Healthy

EAT HEALTHY BEFORE THE PARTY
Eating a healthy meal or snack before for the party may sound like you’re defeating the purpose of the party. After all, you’re going to eat at the party, but eating beforehand is one of the best ways to fend off overeating and impulse eating. Eating a protein, fat and fiber-rich meal will satisfy your hunger, so you don’t show up hungry and looking to eat anything that’s put in front of you. Look to fill up on a large salad with plenty of fat (olive oil or avocado oil will work) and protein from chick or tuna is perfect. If you're short on time make a protein smoothie instead. Try some Grass-Fed Whey Protein with unsweetened almond milk, nut butter, MCT oil, cocoa nibs and an espresso shot or two. Blend and you’re ready to go.
MAKE HEALTHY PARTY FOOD
Making healthy party food is the easiest way to make sure you aren’t killing your diet. Part of being at the party is enjoying the foods you eat, but you can do that without filling up on empty calories or foods that will send your blood sugar levels through the roof. Choose foods that are natural, but still offer lots of flavor like beef, lamb, bison or other meats. Likewise, you can opt for grilled veggies with spices to bring out more flavor. DRINK A GLASS OF WATER, SELTZER OR PLAIN ICED TEA BEFORE YOU EAT
Start off with a big glass of water, flavored seltzer or unsweetened iced tea. A nice big glass of water or another unsweetened drink will help you stay away from sugar-filled drinks, like soda. It will help you curb your appetite. Oftenntimes, when we think we’re hungry, we’re actually just thirsty. Staying well hydrated will be a big plus.
OPT FOR CORN ON THE COB OVER OTHER CARBS
If you’re looking to get some carbs in, opt for corn on the cob over other carbohydrate sources like buns, dinner rolls, pasta or mashed potatoes. Corn on the cob makes a great starch option. Corn on the cob is high in fiber and will keep you feeling full for a while. Fresh corn on the cob also tastes great right off the grill.
GO WITH FRUIT FOR DESSERT
When it’s time for dessert, go with fruit over other dessert options. Although fruit does have some sugar, it won’t be nearly as much as most dessert options. Go with some watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, pears, or apples and you should be set.
CHOOSE LOW-CALORIE ALCOHOLIC DRINKS
Summer barbeque often times also means summer drinking. What many people do realize is one gram of alcohol has almost as many calories a gram of fat. Seven calories per gram of alcohol versus nine grams per gram of fat. However, the calories from alcohol won't benefit your body nearly as much, so be aware of your drink choice. Opt for low-calorie choices like A light beer or wine. If you want something with a bit more kick to it try tequila, vodka, brandy or scotch on the rocks. If mixed drinks are more your style, go with a mojito or vodka soda. No matter what, stay away from high sugar mixers, that will send your calorie consumption through the roof in a hurry.
